Maternity Services

The birth of a child is one of life’s most joyous and memorable events. Ashtabula County Medical Center Maternity Services provides quality, family-centered care that offers you a choice - and helps you create a memory to last a lifetime.

From the knowledgeable, compassionate care and expertise of our nurses to advanced medical technology, ACMC Maternity Services offers expecting families a comprehensive range of services designed to help during pregnancy and childbirth, as well as after the baby is born.

Preparing for Your Baby

ACMC begins the preparation long before your baby is born. With more than 20 classes, ACMC’s Baby Basics is the most comprehensive list of educational offerings within the county. Some classes include:

  • Childbirth education, taught by a certified childbirth education instructor
  • Breastfeeding, taught by a certified lactation consultant
  • Support group meetings for breastfeeding mothers
  • Sibling preparation and grandparenting classes
  • Childbirth refresher
  • Prepared childbirth for teens
  • Teen CPR
  • Planning for a healthy pregnancy

When the Time Comes

All patient care in the ACMC Maternity Unit is directed by registered nurses with advanced obstetrical training.

To make your labor more comfortable, showers, birthing balls and rocking chairs are provided. During the labor process, fetal monitoring is continuous, but there are opportunities to walk in the halls or in your room. Pain relief during labor can include intravenous pain medication, spinal block or epidural anesthesia.

Cesarean sections are performed in a dedicated suite on the unit. ACMC’s beautifully appointed Labor, Delivery and Recovery Suites offer many amenities, including a state-of-the-art birthing bed, sleeper sofa for overnight family visitors, a television, rocking chair and a private bathroom with shower.

Welcome, Baby

ACMC knows that the more time a new mom spends with her baby, the more her confidence grows. The Maternity Unit encourages mothers and babies to room together, and provides bedside education on topics such as feeding (especially breastfeeding), bathing, diapering, umbilical cord care, circumcision care, nutritional issues, postpartum issues and when and when not to call the doctor or health care provider.

The staffed newborn nursery is available for baby when mom needs a rest and at nighttime. Breastfeeding mothers can also consult with a lactation consultant while on the unit. Siblings and grandparents are welcome to visit the unit at any time.

Don’t Forget Dad

Fathers are encouraged to spend time with the baby and arrangements can be made for dad to room with mom and baby overnight.

Home Sweet Home

Inevitably, new parents have questions and concerns about their new baby or mom’s recovery once they return home. Patients are encouraged to call the Maternity Unit nurses’ center at any time of the day or night at 440-997-6654.
