Health For Life Classes

If you are seeing higher numbers on the scale or less motivation for exercise, help is coming in January.

Health for Life, a wellness program offered by Ashtabula County Medical Center, ACMC Outpatient Rehabilitation Services and Premiere Fitness, returns January 2.

The series of classes combines wellness education with exercise classes to help motivate you to lose weight, shape up, or meet whatever health goals you have.

In addition to the 12-week program and wellness education classes led by ACMC physicians and professional staff, the $20 entry fee also includes:

  • 6 Free Premiere Fitness passes ($72 value)
  • 6 Free YMCA of Ashtabula passes ($72 value)
  • Half off the joiner’s fee at the YMCA of Ashtabula if you become a member. ($30 value)
  • Outside community members can join Premiere for $20 per month from January until April ($50 per month value)
  • Cooking tips
  • Nutrition education
  • Prizes for participation and healthy weight loss.

Kathy Chiacchiero, RN, Wellness Coordinator at ACMC, said over the six years that Health for Life classes have met class members who have the support of family, co-workers or fitness buddies have consistent lost weight or met their fitness goals.

Since its start, Health for Life participants lost a total weight of nearly 4,000 pounds. Last year, the average weight loss was 10.3 pounds per person, with a 5.33 percentage loss of weight.

Chiacchiero said for some participants losing weight is not the goal.

“We have some people who are trying to maintain their weight, or they need the extra support and motivation to continue with a healthier lifestyle,” she said.

For those who need even more motivation, a variety of prizes will be offered for successfully meeting the weigh-in and class requirements of Health for Life.

A $200 prize will be awarded to the male and female and $400 to the couple who lose the most percentage of weight (as determined by regular weigh-ins at ACMC Rehabilitation Services or Premiere Fitness). There are also other prizes to be given away, including four $50 cash prizes, a night’s stay at the Lodge at Geneva State Park ($150 value), and memberships to Premiere Fitness ($474 value) and the YMCA ($532 value).

Sign up and weigh-in first thing after the New Year on January 2 at Premiere Fitness or ACMC’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Services Department. The first class will begin on January 9 at noon and again at 6 p.m. All sessions meet in the ACMC Solarium (fifth floor). The classes will continue approx. every 2 weeks until the final class on April 3.
